VANDERCOOK UNIVERSAL 3: TWO-COLOR SPLIT FOUNTAIN POSTERS

Learn to operate the Vandercook Universal 3 press and create stunning two-color posters using split fountain technique combined with wood type. In this intensive workshop, you’ll master the mechanics of this iconic proof press while exploring advanced color blending and registration.

Students will print a split fountain gradient as the first layer, then set wood type from NBLA’s extensive collection and overprint it to create bold, dynamic posters. You’ll learn makeready, packing, impression control, and registration techniques essential for multi-color letterpress work. This is hands-on from start to finish—by the end of the day, you’ll leave with your own edition of professional-quality two-color posters.

Perfect for printers ready to push beyond basics and create work with real visual impact.

Prerequisites: Completion of NBLA’s “Introduction to Letterpress” or equivalent typesetting experience required
Materials: All materials included (ink, paper, use of wood type collection)

Instructor: James Tucker is a printmaker and letterpress printer who founded and ran The Aesthetic Union in San Francisco for ten years. www.jameslewistucker.com
