Pochoir, the French term for stencil, is a well respected tradition in book arts. Popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this art-making technique was an advanced form of stencil printing. Artists would apply color pigments to paper by hand as an elegant and affordable way to reproduce artwork in color.

Join guest artist, Bettina Pauly in this exciting one-day introduction to pochoir workshop! Bettina will offer a short history lesson, and share pochoir samples, including an artist demonstration on how to use pigments with different applicators. Students will be encouraged to learn the basics of stencil creation and will work on images made up of simple shapes to practice their technique. Throughout the day, an assortment of materials will be on hand to create stencils; different brushes and their effects will be examined; and various ‘dry pigments’ and papers will be investigated as students expand their pochoir skills. The instructor will also lead a discussion on how students can creatively incorporate pochoir into their own artwork, including books, prints, cards, and more! Students will work on a set of note cards to take home and learn how to make a simple folder for the samples that were made during class. The materials fee will include brushes, stencils, paper pigments and an assortment of paper cardstock.

Please note: This class requires some hand dexterity to maneuver an exacto blade cutting knife.
