INK MIXING FOR LETTERPRESS: COLOR THEORY & PRACTICE

Learn to mix custom ink colors and understand how different inks behave on press. This hands-on workshop demystifies ink mixing, covering how to achieve specific colors from base inks, adjust viscosity and transparency, and troubleshoot common ink problems.

You'll work with NBLA's collection of base inks to mix custom colors, learning the differences between rubber-based and oil-based inks, when to use transparent vs. opaque mixing techniques, and how additives affect print quality. Students will print color samples to take home as a personal reference guide.

Whether you're trying to match a specific color, create unique effects, or simply understand your inks better, this workshop gives you practical knowledge you'll use every time you print.

Prerequisites: Active printing practice recommended
Materials: All materials included (base inks, modifiers, paper for samples)

Instructor: James Tucker is a printmaker and letterpress printer who founded and ran The Aesthetic Union in San Francisco for ten years. www.jameslewistucker.com
